What is a Fire Authority?
A fire authority in Washington State is the joining of two or more adjoining fire protection jurisdictions through a vote of the people within those jurisdictions.
What is the Kent Regional Fire Authority?
- The passage of Proposition No. 1 on April 27, 2010 has authorized the merger of the Kent Fire Department and King County Fire District 37 into one organization.
- The new organization will retain the name - Kent Fire Department, and will serve the City of Kent, Unincorporated Fire District 37, and the City of Covington.
- Governance and accountability will rest with a 6-member board consisting of 3 elected councilmembers from Kent and 3 elected commissioners from Fire District 37.
- The City of Covington will receive direct representation from their elected commissioners of Fire District 37, and an at-large non-voting member of the Covington City Council.
- A citizens advisory committee will provide additional oversight and input to the Kent Regional Fire Authority Board.
Why Create the Kent Regional Fire Authority?
The City of Kent, King County Fire District 37, and the City of Covington have jointly concluded that forming the Regional Fire Authority is the best solution to:
- Move forward in addressing threats of declining fire and emergency medical services.
- Create regional response efficiencies.
